Home of the CWQ™

The Culture in the Workplace Questionnaire™ is based on the seminal cultural research of Dr. Geert Hofstede, with whom ITAP has had a long relationship. ITAP is one of only 2 companies worldwide endorsed by Dr. Hofstede and approved to represent his research. According to Dr. Hofstede, "This [approval] is due to their professionalism and deep understanding of my work.”

Culture, what Dr. Hofstede refers to as "software of the mind/mental programming," is a critical variable that guides peoples' actions and reactions. Understanding one's own culture and the impact of culture on the actions of others is essential for effective global business interactions. The Culture in the Workplace Questionnaire™ provides respondents with insights about themselves and a better understanding of how their cultural preferences, as well as the cultural preferences of others, impact working relationships.

The Global Team Process Questionnaire™ (GTPQ), a proprietary instrument developed by ITAP International, helps global teams improve their effectiveness and productivity. The GTPQ measures human process interactions - how well members work together - on global teams. Virtual team leaders may be asked to form, charter, manage, develop and monitor the progress of these teams, often from a distance. With global and virtual teams, competitive advantage can be gained or lost depending on how well people from different cultures work together, which is dependent on their level of trust and communication.

This diagnostic tool enables team leaders and other decision makers to support and develop global teams. Its proven ability to identify the barriers to success on global teams can positively impact a company's bottom line and improve team productivity. The GTPQ provides a benchmark for the global team's current effectiveness. Against that baseline, companies can measure change over time (by repeating the application of the GTPQ), identify areas for improvement, initiate interventions, plan learning and development programs, measure progress toward agreed-upon goals within and across teams, and, by correlating results with existing performance measures, measure team process to determine return on investment.

Teams do not achieve their timelines and deliverables if they can not work effectively together. When such teams are ineffective, they can consume resources without sufficient productivity to justify the investment. When teams work effectively together, overcoming distance and utilizing different cultural values and approaches through technology and training, they become a competitive advantage for their organizations.

ITAP is one of only 2 companies worldwide endorsed by Dr. Hofstede and approved to represent his research. According to Dr. Hofstede, "This [approval] is due to their professionalism and deep understanding of my work.”

The author of Culture's Consequences, the most important work in the field of cross-cultural quantitative research, Prof. Geert Hofstede has quantitatively analyzed how workplace values are influenced by culture. Geert Hofstede analyzed a large data base of employee values scores collected by IBM between 1967 and 1973 covering more than 70 countries, from which he first used the 40 largest only, and afterwards extended the analysis to 50 countries and 3 regions. In the editions of Geert Hofstede's work since 2001, scores are listed for 74 countries and regions, partly based on replications and extensions of the IBM study on different international populations.

Subsequent studies validating the earlier results have included commercial airline pilots and students in 23 countries, civil service managers in 14 counties, 'up-market' consumers in 15 countries and 'elites' in 19 countries.

Geert Hofstede completed both a classical and a technical education. He holds a Master's level degree in Mechanical Engineering from Delft Technical University. He worked in different Dutch companies in roles varying from production worker to plant manager. After a part-time study he obtained a cum laude Doctorate in Social Psychology at Groningen University. From 1965 to 1971 he founded and managed the Personnel Research department of IBM Europe; he was involved in research in nearly all countries of Western Europe and the Middle East. He subsequently became a faculty member and researcher at IMD, Switzerland; INSEAD, France; EIASM, Belgium and IIASA, Austria. From 1980 to 1983 he returned to industry as a Director of Human Resources of Fasson Europe, Leiden.

Through the publication in the USA of his scholarly book Culture's Consequences (1980, new edition 2001), he became a founder of comparative intercultural research; his ideas are used worldwide. His popular book Cultures and Organizations: Software of the Mind (3rd edition, 2010) has so far appeared in 17 languages including Chinese, Japanese and Korean. He is the most cited Dutch author in the Social Science Citation Index. He has taught at universities in Hong Kong, Hawaii and Australia. He is a Doctor Honoris Causa of Nyenrode University and of three other European universities.

Before his retirement in 1993, Dr. Hofstede taught organizational anthropology and international management at the University of Limburg, Maastricht, and then was appointed the first director of the Institute for Research on International Co-operation (IRIC). He is also a Fellow of the Academy of Management in the USA, one of few non-American members.

ITAP licenses the Culture in the Workplace Questionnaire™ from Professor Hofstede.

ITAP uses tools to collect data to inform our consulting and development solutions. ITAP International's family of tools includes:

The Culture in the Workplace Questionnaire™ - developed under license from Dr. Geert Hofstede, this instrument is useful to provide individual profiles, team profiles and for research on the impact of culture.. Click here to try the interactive Preference for Certainty questionnaire.

ITAP’s Team Process Questionnaire System – This consists of three instruments:

1. The Global Team Process Questionnaire™ (GTPQ) - The GTPQ provides a baseline for global teams' and against that baseline, companies can measure change, identify areas for improvement, compare their results to industry averages, and measure the successes needed to figure out the actual return on investment. Click here to try the interactive demonstration sample GTPQ.

2. Organizational Team Process Questionnaire™ (OTPQ) - The OTPQ, appropriate for local/domestic teams, provides a baseline for global teams' and against that baseline, companies can measure change, identify areas for improvement, compare their results to industry averages, and measure the successes needed to figure out the actual return on investment.

3. Action Learning Team Process Questionnaire™ (ALTPQ) - developed in concert with Strategic Learning Scenarios, Inc. the ALTPQ is designed to assess the group dynamics of action learning sets/teams. The ALTPQ allows the facilitator/leader of the action learning program to assess both the extent to which the team is operating effectively and the perceived value of the learning taking place.

e-StrategyMapper™ - creates a strategy map for business and helps organizations manage the strategy implementation through a Balanced Score Card and strategic action plans. Organizations use the e-StrategyMapper output to prioritize investments and their change initiatives, as well as putting figures to targets and preparing appropriate action plans.

The Action Learning Team Process Questionnaire™ (ALTPQ), a proprietary instrument developed by ITAP International in concert with Strategic Learning Scenarios, Inc., is designed to get inside the group dynamics of action learning sets/teams. The first such instrument to be offered in the action learning field, it is based on the structure and tested approach of the Global Team Process Questionnaire™ (GTPQ).

How Does the ALTPQ Improve the Effectiveness of Action Learning Programs?

The ALTPQ provides critical data for targeted improvement on action learning teams.  Action learning teams can compare their progress with norms developed across many teams, as well as measure their own team's progress/improvement over time.

The ALTPQ allows both the facilitator/leader and the participants of action learning programs to assess the:

  1. extent to which the team is operating effectively, and
  2. perceived value of the learning taking place.

When used with action learning projects, where the work tempo is intensive and success of the team depends on good group dynamics, the ALTPQ:

  • identifies specific areas that without improvement can interrupt or impede team effectiveness
  • promotes critical reflection at both individual and group levels, allowing the group itself to determine how best to deal with problems and self-facilitate progress.

The ALTPQ provides a facilitator or learning coach specific, identified data for helping a set work through its self-determined problem areas. Because the results represent the perceptions of the team members themselves, it enjoys instant credibility.

The ALTPQ guides interventions before patterns of negative team behaviors become firmly established by addressing shortfalls in team process when members are still malleable and receptive to positive change.  Through the skillful and selective interventions of a consultant, the team finds it easy to make meaning out of findings included in the ALTPQ reports and to assume an active role in shaping strategies to improve its effectiveness. As a result, team members are much more likely to be strongly committed to the success of those strategies.

NOTE: The results can be used directly by action learning team members, without outside intervention, if the action learning design fits this approach. In this case, a brief presentation on using the results would be provided to the group members.
